چکیده

We tackle the prediction of instructor intervention in student posts from discussion forums in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Our key finding is that using automatically obtained discourse relations improves the prediction of when instructors intervene in student discussions, when compared with a state-of-the-art, feature-rich baseline. Our supervised classifier makes use of an automatic discourse parser which outputs Penn Discourse Treebank (PDTB) tags that represent in-post discourse features. We show PDTB relationbased features increase the robustness of the classifier and complement baseline features in recalling more diverse instructor intervention patterns. In comprehensive experiments over 14 MOOC offerings from several disciplines, the PDTB discourse features improve performance on average. The resultant models are less dependent on domain-specific vocabulary, allowing them to better generalize to new courses.

Prediction of Above-elbow Motions in Amputees, based on Electromyographic(EMG) Signals, Using Nonlinear Autoregressive Exogenous (NARX) Model

Introduction In order to improve the quality of life of amputees, biomechatronic researchers and biomedical engineers have been trying to use a combination of various techniques to provide suitable rehabilitation systems. Diverse biomedical signals, acquired from a specialized organ or cell system, e.g., the nervous system, are the driving force for the whole system. Electromyography(EMG), as a...

Predicting Instructor's Intervention in MOOC forums

Instructor intervention in student discussion forums is a vital component in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), where personalized interaction is limited. This paper introduces the problem of predicting instructor interventions in MOOC forums. We propose several prediction models designed to capture unique aspects of MOOCs, combining course information, forum structure and posts content. Our ...

Distributed Nonlinear Robust Control for Power Flow in Islanded Microgrids

In this paper, a robust local controller has been designed to balance the power for distributed energy resources (DERs) in an islanded microgrid. Three different DER types are considered in this study; photovoltaic systems, battery energy storage systems, and synchronous generators. Since DER dynamics are nonlinear and uncertain, which may destabilize the power system or decrease the performanc...

CALL courseware for learning reactive tokens in face-to-face dialogs

We developed courseware for teaching reactive tokens. Reactive tokens are audio or visual signals that structure discourse, and are sent by discourse participants who do not have the floor to those who do. Cultures with much in common sometimes differ markedly in their reactive tokens. Nonnative language learners need to learn how to interpret and convey reactive tokens in order to be perceived...

Forecasting of rainfall using different input selection methods on climate signals for neural network inputs

Long-term prediction of precipitation in planning and managing water resources, especially in arid and semi-arid countries such as Iran, has a great importance. In this paper, a method for predicting long-term precipitation using weather signals and artificial neural networks is presented. For this purpose, climatic data (large-scale signals) and meteorological data (local precipitation and tem...
